Baasanjav Choijiljav

By Artist

BAASANJAW CHOIJILJAW (b.1977)

Baasanjav Choijiljav is a Mongolian artist known for his pioneering role in the development of the contemporary version of the Mongol Zurag painting style. Technically similar to Tibetan Tangka, Mongol Zurag was developed in the early 20th century and was mostly characterized by the depiction of secular themes. Although the style was not encouraged during socialist times, some artists used it to depict socialist ideology and nationalist themes. The Mongol Zurag had finally revived after 1990s, and artist Baasanjav was the one who first started using its technique and traditional motif in contemporary art practice, addressing social, political, and environmental issues of his own country.

Trained at the Institute of Fine Arts, Mongolian University of Arts and Culture in 2000-2005, Baasanjav organized his first solo exhibition in 2006 in Ulaanbaatar, then at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan (2013), in Barcelona, Spain (2007), Gwangju, South Korea (2018) and again in Ulaanbaatar in 2019. His style and motif gained the attention of international critics and curators and was invited to present his works at 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial, Japan in 2012, 8th (2012) and 9th (2014) Shanghai International Art Biennale, China, Arsenal (2012), Kiev Biennale, Ukraine as well as other exhibitions in Hong Kong (2011), South Korea (2008 and 2015), Italy (2009) and in NY, USA in 2019.

Baatarzorig Batjargal

By Artist

BAATARZORIG BATJARGAL (b.1983)

One of the emerging talents of Mongolia, artist Baatarzorig Batjargal developed his own distinctive style of painting, adopting forms and techniques of Mongol Zurag, which was developed in early twentieth century during the independence movement in Mongolia, to express the ideals of secular nationalism. His works are characterized by the paradoxical mixture of different scenes and characters, such as nomadic lifestyle, animals, religious figures, scientists, politicians, artists, pop stars and elements of western culture, depicted in different time periods and places in Mongolia or elsewhere. Baatarzorig’s paintings are particularly concerned with the loss of traditional heritage through a succession of regimes, from the Soviet-style communism to the globalized consumerist capitalism. His sarcastic and technically elaborate paintings seem uniquely Mongolian contextually, yet universal in a way as it explores the nature of the transformations that is taking place in human societies everywhere.

Graduate from Mongolian University of Arts and Culture, artist Baatarzorig has been exhibiting his extraordinary works in prestigious museums and galleries in Mongolia, Switzerland, UK, Austria, Germany, South Korea, China, Turkey, Italy, Australia, France, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Italy and was invited to participate in 10th Mediations Biennale, Art Istanbul Feshane, Bangkok Art Biennale, 2nd Yinchuan Biennale, China, Heimat, Guang’an Field Art Biennale, China, 8th Asia Pacific Triennial, Queensland, Australia, and Bodrum Biennale, Turkey. His works are in the collection of notable museums including Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Australia, Minneapolis Institute of Art, USA, Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation, Thailand, Chicago Booth, London, and individuals, such as Uli Sigg and Jean Jacques, Switzerland.

Baatarzorig currently lives and works in Ulaanbaatar.

NOMIN BOLD
Born in 1982

Nomin Bold uses the aesthetics of Mongolian and Buddhist art, commissioned by ancient religious and imperial institutions, to comment on contemporary issues. She was trained in traditional painting methods and began her career by incorporating archaeological findings and intricate images of deities into her artwork. She now uses symbol-heavy colors and figures to question everyday values. She examines themes of wealth, politics, nature, and human relationships by placing people from secular society in the world of gods. Her goal is to displace current conventions and encourage viewers to evaluate cultural norms from the point of view of Mongolias ancient history.
