WALL STREET INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE: Baatarzorig Batjargal’s solo show at Jack Bell Gallery in London, United Kingdom

Wall Street International Magazine: Baatarzorig Batjargal, 12 — 25 Apr 2019 at the Jack Bell Gallery in London, United Kingdom

Batjargal draws on the techniques of Mongol Zurag painting to address the broader history of Mongolia’s development over the past century. The Zurag painting style first emerged during the Mongolian independence movement in the early 20th Century. Originally an art form to express the ideals of secular nationalism, today Batjargal has breathed new life into the medium.

During a time of unprecedented urbanization, the artist addresses the contradictions of his own environment and its transformation from past to present. Panning through the repressions of Soviet style communism to the inequalities and consumerism of global capitalism, Batjargal offers narratives concerned with the loss of traditional heritage. In a rich tapestry of various regimes, the portraits in his recent series include gods, holy men, artists, intellectuals, warriors, noblemen, politicians and oligarchs.

Batjargal was born 1983 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. He is a BA graduate from School of Fine Arts at the Mongolian University of Arts and Culture.

BATZORIG DUGARSUREN – BAZO (b.1979)

Bazo works center upon the idea of eternal motion and reincarnation as symbolized by the form of the circle, an essential image both in the nomadic philosophy of the Mongols and Buddhism. In this sense, the circle has multiple meanings in his work – it is at once a representation of Mongolian history through the millennia, a personal quest for meaning as well as an artistic element full of possibilities. Bazo has exhibited extensively both in Mongolia and abroad, including solo exhibitions at Red Ger Creative Space, 976 Art Gallery, Xanadu Art Gallery, Gallery of Union of Mongolian Artists and Globus Gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia and group exhibitions held in Mongolia, Singapore, China, Japan, Korea, Finland, Hong Kong, Germany, France, Thailand, and USA. Bazo has received numerous awards, including Best Artwork of the Year 2007 and 2010 from the National Modern Art Gallery of Mongolia and participated in international residency programs in Jeju, South Korea, Pori City, Finland and Stichting Kaus Àustralis Studio, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Formerly a director of the Blue Sun Contemporary Art Center, Bazo was born and grew up in Erdenetsagaan, a small village of Sukhbaatar province in the eastern Mongolia. In the late 1990s, he attended the Setgemj Industrial Design Art College, then shifted to the Institute of Fine Arts in Ulaanbaatar and graduated in 2004 with a BA degree in mural painting. Emerged as one of the pioneering figures of the contemporary art scene in Mongolia, Bazo worked together with Dalkh-Ochir Yondonjunai, Enkhbold Togmidshiirev, Ganzug Sedbazar and other peer artists, playing important role in introducing various forms of artistic expression such as performance art, land art, installation, and media art, which were new phenomenon in the post socialist Mongolia.

ERDENE SUKHBAATAR

By ArtistNo Comments

ERDENE SUKHBAATAR

Born in 1991

Graduate from the Mongolian State University of Culture, artist Erdene Sukhbaatar is one of the brightest representatives of emerging talents of Mongolia. Erdene’s earlier painting style, which was predominantly characterized by geometric shapes and intense colors, has gradually transformed into softer, yet dynamic, also more abstract and monochromic form. Erdene frequently illustrate tangled bodies and ribbons, creating in a single continuous brush stroke, technically look like similar to Mongolian traditional calligraphy. But unlike the calligraphy, the usage of oil paint requires longer time for creating lengthy curves, seemingly challenging his physical, mental and emotional balance. Spontaneously and playfully executed, black ribbons seem disconnected from monochromic abstract background, rhythmically swirling in the air, giving a sense of three-dimensionality as well as resembling Mongolian traditional patterns.
