BATTUR TSEDENPIL (b.1980)

Trained in European classical painting technique, artists Battur has worked for over a decade to develop his own monochronic, archaic-photo-like painting style. Using dark colors, he often portrays historical figures, particularly Mongolian queens, and noble women, who lived early 20th century. He also portrays modern women with centuries old traditional clothing and backdrops to underline the persistent nature of women. A common scenario that artist Battur choose to depict is a glowing face of women standing in the darkness, where he blends European painting techniques with traditional Mongolian, such as Zumber which he uses to render women’s jewelry, made of gold, silver, corals, and pearls.

Currently a teacher at the Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture, artist Battur Tsedenpil was born in a small village Saikhan situated in the north of Mongolia. He holds both BA and MA degrees from the university, where he is teaching now. Since 2001, the artist has boasted an impressive career with dozens of solo and joint exhibitions held at premier art galleries and museums across Mongolia, including the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art, the Choijin Lama Temple Museum, the Mongolian Modern Art Gallery, 976 Art Gallery and more. Ts. Battur has also participated in several international exhibitions and biennales, including the International Workshop “Muong’s land 2nd & Asia Art Link 4”, the 6th Beijing International Art Biennale, “Nord Art 2016” International Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf, and other exhibitions in China, Japan, South Korea, USA, Malaisia, and Russia.
