Battur Tsedenpil

By ArtistNo Comments

BATTUR TSEDENPIL (b.1980)

Trained in European classical painting technique, artists Battur has worked for over a decade to develop his own monochronic, archaic-photo-like painting style. Using dark colors, he often portrays historical figures, particularly Mongolian queens, and noble women, who lived early 20th century. He also portrays modern women with centuries old traditional clothing and backdrops to underline the persistent nature of women. A common scenario that artist Battur choose to depict is a glowing face of women standing in the darkness, where he blends European painting techniques with traditional Mongolian, such as Zumber which he uses to render women’s jewelry, made of gold, silver, corals, and pearls.

Currently a teacher at the Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture, artist Battur Tsedenpil was born in a small village Saikhan situated in the north of Mongolia. He holds both BA and MA degrees from the university, where he is teaching now. Since 2001, the artist has boasted an impressive career with dozens of solo and joint exhibitions held at premier art galleries and museums across Mongolia, including the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art, the Choijin Lama Temple Museum, the Mongolian Modern Art Gallery, 976 Art Gallery and more. Ts. Battur has also participated in several international exhibitions and biennales, including the International Workshop “Muong’s land 2nd & Asia Art Link 4”, the 6th Beijing International Art Biennale, “Nord Art 2016” International Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf, and other exhibitions in China, Japan, South Korea, USA, Malaisia, and Russia.

Khishigsuren Batdelger | Chandmani | Aug 9 – Sep 6, 2019

The exhibition presents series of horse portraits, artist Khishigsuren has recently created. Whilst realist horse paintings are prevalent in Mongolia, artist Khishigsuren’s horses characterize by bright monotonous colors and mixture of realism with pop art. For this new series, artist used principle colors (black, white, yellow, red, blue and green) and symbolic elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void) used in Buddhism, to illustrate relationship between human-being, animal and nature and the people’s fascination towards horses; their nobility of spirit, virtue and fortitude.

Since graduating from the School of Fine Arts in 2005, Khishigsuren has been using different techniques to draw on the connection between horses and man and nature. He has exhibited in more than 40 exhibitions in his home country and abroad in countries such as United States, Korea, China, Japan, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Battur Tsedenpil | Timeless | Jul 24 – Aug 6, 2019

“Timeless” features portraits of 13 modern Mongolian women in the early 20th century time-lapse. By juxtaposing modern faces against a century old clothing and environment, artist Battur exposes the persistent nature of women that are timelessly inherit.

Battur has been painting for more than 10 years – depicting the fine relationship between humans and nature. In his works, he is known for blending classical painting techniques with Mongolian painting technique such as “zumber”. Zumber is a traditional decorative method that is used to bring out the material quality of objects by applying dense dots of glue or paint. “Timeless” focuses on highlighting this technique where it’s used to adorn the hair dresses, gold, silver, and pearl accessories of the subjects.

Since 2001, Battur has exhibited in key art institutions of Mongolia such as Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts, Mongolian Modern Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Union of Mongolian Artists, Xanadu Gallery, and Art Space 976+.

Moreover, he has participated in numerous international exhibitions and biennales around the world. To name a few, Art under the Roof, organized in Vietnam, the 6th Beijing Biennale, Nord Art 2016 and 2019 in Büdelsdorf, International Art Festival in Malaysia, as well as Japan-Mongolia-Korean joint exhibition organized in Tokyo.

Ts. Battur has won the 1st prize in exhibition dedicated to the poet and author A. Lkhagvaa’s, the first prize in Realist Genre in International Exhibition of Artists-Teachers of Eurosia in Irkutsk Russia and the first place in the Chojin Llama’s Temple exhibition. In 2015, the Mongolian University of Arts and Culture named him the Best Young Professor of the Year and in 2017, he received credentials from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports of Mongolia.

Immunity

Urjinkhand Onon | Immunity | Jun 4 – Jun 18, 2019

Art exists right there, in those moments of contemplation. In her works, white expresses gloomy thoughts and dark colors expresses love and tenderness. These are the things I wish you all could first see at the exhibition entitled Immunity. There are no fortuitous lines in the pieces. Instead, all lines shall lead you to the conceptualization of itself. The hues are radiant and soft, but it evokes sorrow. The abstracts are innocent, but how does it elicit such perceptions? Another question of why? That why?

‘Immunity’ is the “Present” created by Urjinkhand. The “Past” and “Present” is in the eyes of the beholder, at conflict, but inseparable twins of thought that coalesce with one another. That is her awakening, and her language of art. This language is her main idea. We are supposed to see the former first.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ARIUNTUYA JAMBALDORJ (b.1992)

Born in Ulaanbaatar, Ariuntuya Jambaldorj is one of the most prolific young artists working today in Mongolia. From 2010-2014 she studied monumental art at Fine Art School at the Mongolian University of Arts and Culture. During 10 years of her artistic career, Ariuntuya has been going through the process of continuous experimentation, creating multi-disciplinary works that explore ideas around spirituality, existential questions such as life and death and the relationship between human and nature. Her artistic practice incorporates drawings, sculptures, collages, videos, land art, and installations. She often uses poetic phrases to describe her works. Cultures and philosophies of nomadic lifestyle often fascinates her and work as source of her inspiration. As an inquisitive individual, she explores the mystery of causes and effects, the signs of nature and the way nomads interpreted them and the methods of communicating with animals and nature.

Ariuntuya displayed her first solo exhibition A Drop of Air at 976 Art Gallery and the second The Fountain at Red Ger Creative Space, both in 2019. Her animation work Thread received The Best Animated Film prize at the Altan Khalis International Film Festival in 2019. Ariuntuya presented media work Origin 21 at the 6th Ulaanbaatar International Media Art Festival by Arts Council of Mongolia and Art Week 2021, organized by the Ministry of Culture of Mongolia. ASIA PACIFIC TRIENNIAL 9: Enkhbold Togmidshiirev’s Paintings Incorporate a Range of Media

Enkhbold Togmidshiirev’s Paintings Incorporate a Range of Media

Enkhbold Togmidshiirev is a painter and performance and installation artist best known for his large-scale, monochromatic canvases executed in materials derived from his nomadic culture, and improvised performances using the ger, the traditional Mongolian home.

Created in parallel to his performance work, Enkhbold’s restrained colour-field paintings incorporate unusual media — horse dung, felt, shrubs, ash, rust, sheep skin and tripe — which are either laid over the canvas or worked into its fibres.

These materials are sourced from the countryside, when the artist returns to his homeland, and undergo extensive preparation before he uses them in his paintings. The dung, for instance, is dried and crumbled, and sifted three times to ensure a fine consistency. It is then applied over a base of gelatine and gel, or mixed into the base directly, after which it is covered in acrylic paint. Horse dung can differ in colour and texture depending on the season and the specific environmental conditions of the animals, and so the material provides the artist with a shifting palette.

Occasionally, Enkhbold incorporates collage into his paintings, and fabrics such as cotton, silk and hessian vary the surfaces of his works, introducing formal devices like Rothko-esque horizontal fields through stitching and textural contrast.

Enkhbold’s vast planes of colour and tone are determined exercises in abstraction, an abstraction that the artist also emphasises in the form of his performative ger. It is the materiality of his works, like the performances they complement, that preserves a strong connection with both traditional and contemporary Mongolian life.

ART REVIEW: Interview with artist Jantsankhorol Erdenebayar on his participation in 58 Venice Art Biennale

ART REVIEW: Venice questionnaire for artist Jantsankhorol Erdenebayar

E. Jantsankhorol is representing Mongolia. The pavilion is in Calle del Forno and performances will be held in various public spaces.

What can you tell us about your exhibition plans for Venice?

As for general exhibition plans, I’m creating everything from scratch on the spot. I have prepared sketches and plans beforehand, but I’m sure that things are going to be changed, re-thought, adjusted, and improvised. In regards to the creation process, the unique context and situations of Venice (how things move) are almost making me think like a nomad, which I do have some experience of from growing up in Mongolia. As for a more specific plan, I am planning on creating a sort of site-specific environment with a sound component to the exhibition, which will involve Mongolian throat singing.

What does it mean to ‘represent’ your country? For you is it an honour or is it problematic?

I think it is definitely an honour, but I’m trying to not dwell on the fact, and instead concern myself with what I’m going to do and the pieces I will create.

Is your work transnational or rooted locally?

I try to be transnational as much as I can when seeking ways to communicate with people through my work. But I find myself inspired by my cultural traditions a lot, and the question of whether to be transnational or culture-specific has always been present and challenging in my work. However, this is a fact I do enjoy working around, because I think such questions and quandaries will continue and persist, and doubles as a good driving force.

How does having a pavilion in Venice make a difference in the artistic scene in your country of origin?

I think having a national pavilion makes quite a difference and impact on the art scene back in my country, especially for the younger generation. It may not make much of a direct difference right now with the contemporary art scene still being developed and growing in Mongolia, but it will certainly be a big influence and difference-maker in the future, in the sense that it will encourage and inspire other artists to seek involvement in international exhibitions.

If you’ve been to the biennale before, what is your first or best memory of Venice?

I came to see the 2015 Biennale, and it was a fantastic experience seeing all the art and art lovers from all over the world at the same time. But what left the biggest impression on me was the uniqueness of the venues and spaces where artists and pavilions exhibited. There were almost no typical white cubes of exhibition spaces, but all crooked and uneven walls and floors, with every venue boasting their own different and unique characteristics.

You will no doubt be very busy, but what else are you looking forward to seeing?

I hope that I could take a moment to recognise and appreciate everything as much as I can.
